Anxiety is a normal reaction to stress, but when anxiety lasts or occurs for no reason it becomes a problem.  Anxiety disorders often need anxiety treatment.  Treatments for anxiety usually include therapy and medication.  There are also other anxiety treatment options that individuals are encouraged to try.


Therapy includes counseling and other work with a psychologist or other mental health professional.  Therapy is often considered an important part of anxiety treatment because it can help a person learn to cope with feelings of anxiety.

Therapy is often used to get to the underlying reasons for the anxiety disorder.  Many different types of therapy are used.  Thoughts and behaviors are examined to see what triggers anxiety and help to refine thoughts or behaviors to reduce anxiety.  Another type of therapy is exposure therapy where you are exposed to the fears that cause you anxiety in hopes of helping you learn to cope with them.

Therapy can help a person to identify their anxiety better and to understand it better.  In the long term this can help a person to overcome the feelings and learn to cope with their anxiety better.


Medication is a common treatment, often use din conjunction with therapy.  Medications range from benzodiazepines to antidepressants.  Medication alone can often cause other problems and some medications may not work at all.

Some medications used to treat anxiety may be habit forming.  They may also have strict warnings and require monitoring.  For some anxiety disorders medication is only used when the trigger is known and when the person will be exposed to the trigger.  For other disorders medication is required for the long term.

It is important that with any medication use a person and their doctor discuss all the risks associated with the medication and that the patient is monitored while on the medication.

Other Options

There is constant work done in this field of medicine and new treatments are being tried.  There have been some successful cases where patients used alternative options for treatment.

Some alternative treatments that have shown promise include exercise which helps to naturally relieve stress, relaxation therapy as a learned control method, biofeedback and hypnosis.  Getting support from others suffering from anxiety is also a common treatment method.

Everyone is different and not all treatments will work for everyone. That is why it is important to work with your doctor to find the treatment methods that work best for you.
