Depression is a serious condition that affects millions of people every year.  Depression can leave a person feeling helpless, alone, sad, and worthless.  There are ways to combat depression and help to alleviate some of the feelings of despair.

One of the best ways to fight depression is by exercising.  Exercise is a very effective way to help ease the harsh symptoms of depression.  And it doesn’t take a lot of exercise to see an improvement.  Exercise has been found to be so effective that many doctors are prescribing regular exercise as a means to overcome depression right along with medication and psychotherapy.

Studies have shown that a person needs to exercise for at least 30 minutes a day, three to five times a week to see the benefits and improve the symptoms of depression. Any amount of exercise, though, is going to improve the overall condition of a person who suffers from depression.  The key is to start out at a level that is attainable and build on that.

Exercise helps to relieve depression by boosting the confidence levels of those who suffer from the condition.  When a person is able to do a work out routine, or take a brisk walk, it gives them a sense of accomplishment and helps to increase feelings of self worth.  A regular exercise routine can also increase the health and overall appearance of a person which will further alleviate depression symptoms.

Exercise also provides a welcome distraction that helps to take a person’s mind off of the cares and problems of day to day life.  By shifting the focus off of the negative aspects of a person’s life and onto an enjoyable activity such as riding a bike or going for a hike it relieves anxiety and helps a person to focus on outward things.  Exercise is also a good way to be able to interact with other people in a healthy environment.  Establishing healthy relationships with other people who share a common interest helps to diminish feelings of isolation and loneliness that are so prevalent in people who suffer with depression.

When getting started on an exercise routine to help alleviate the symptoms of depression it is important to get the support of a health care professional.  Establish the kinds of exercise and activities that are appealing and start slowly so you don’t get overwhelmed.  And above all else don’t give up.  Every step you take is a step in the right direction.
