Individuals suffering from severe anxiety disorders have significant challenges to face. Anxiety is a broad topic that covers many issues, ranging from quite mild to severe. Those experiencing extreme conditions may fall within specific categories of anxiety disorders. Following is information about various types of these conditions.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

Perhaps one of the most recognizable conditions is obsessive-compulsive disorder. Whilst this disorder is quite well known, many people do not recognize OCD as an anxiety disorder. Obsessive-compulsive disorder derives from obsessive thoughts that lead to compulsive behaviours.

OCD is classified as an anxiety disorder because the individual engages in odd, ritualistic behaviours in order to quell anxiousness. The symptoms of the condition last longer than an hour each day, making it difficult for the person to function normally.

Panic Attacks

Many people are familiar with panic attacks as well. These episodes are very frightening in spite of their relative short duration. The individual suffering from an attack feels an overwhelming feeling of dread companied by severe breathing problems, increased heart rate and dizziness. Some people feel as if they are going to die during the episode. Panic disorder consists of recurrent attacks that arise suddenly.

Acute Stress Disorder

Acute stress disorder is a temporary condition that results from a traumatic event. The anxiousness is quite severe but it wanes over time. This condition is very similar to post traumatic stress disorder aside from the relatively short duration.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can occur after a seriously traumatic event. The individual is prone to fixate on the trauma and stressful memories arise on a regular basis. The symptoms include severe anxiety and panicked episodes that last longer than one month.

Phobias

Phobic conditions are classified as anxiety disorders as well. Some people experience specific phobia that consists of an extreme fear of a specific situation or object. For example, the individual may have an unrealistic fear of spiders that interferes with his ability to function normally.

Social phobia relates specifically to social interactions. The individual has excessive fear of interacting with others in various situations. Some may fear speaking in front of a group of people.

Medical Conditions

Some forms of anxiety stem from a medical condition. The individual may suffer from panic attacks, obsessive thoughts and compulsions because of a particular medical condition.

Substances

Some toxins can cause anxiety, obsessions, compulsions or panic attacks. Other elements including medication or illegal drug abuse can lead to these responses as well.

Severe anxiety comes in many forms. Unveiling the specific condition is an integral part of developing a viable treatment plan.
