Learn how I beat Depression

Depression is a serious illness that affects millions of people.  The dictionary defines depression as a mental state characterized by a pessimistic sense of inadequacy and a despondent lack of activity caused due to changes in the brain chemicals resulting for various reasons.  Depression is also referred to as a “major depressive disorder”.  There are many different types of treatments available to combat depression ranging from medicines to talk therapy and natural remedies.  New studies have shown that a new kind of therapy may be very effective in treating the symptoms of depression.  This new therapy is called music therapy.
What is Music Therapy?
If you are suffering from depression music may just be the key to helping you overcome the illness.  Many people agree that music helps to lift their spirits.  Certain songs may take them back to memories and times long ago.  The study of music therapy for depression has been ongoing for some time now.  Researchers caution that music therapy is not suitable for all cases of depression, however listening to soothing music has helped to decrease the anxiety of many people who suffer with depression.  Music is a very powerful tool that can be used to evoke a wide range of emotions.  Many music therapy depression researchers are confidant that the therapy is an effective and gentle way to treat various forms of depression.
A study on the effectiveness of music therapy was conducted by the Cochrane Collaboration, a non-profit group that reviews health care issues.  The findings were not conclusive; however the reviewers did find that five random trials that studied the effects of music treatment showed that four out of five times the music therapy worked better at easing depression symptoms, in comparison to other methods of treatment that did not involve music.
Studies also suggested that music therapy as a means to treat depression not only helped to improve the moods of the participant but that there was a lower dropout rate for those participating in the therapy as opposed to other therapy methods.  Music therapy for depression may be an especially effective treatment option to use with young adults and teens that may reject more traditional forms of treatment.  Also some members of the older generation that do not feel comfortable discussing private matters and talking openly about their feelings may be better able to associate with music.
Music therapy can be used one of two ways.  A therapist may have a patient listen to music and discuss the feelings and memories it evokes, or a patient may be invited to improvise and create their own music as a means of expression.  Either way the treatment is done it has been shown to be highly effective.
