Depression is a serious condition that affects millions of people around the world.  There are different levels of depression ranging from mild depression to moderate depression to severe depression.  There are also different types of depression such as post partum depression, which affects new mothers.  The moderate form is a very common type of depression experienced by people.  Don’t let the name fool you though; even the moderate variety is very serious and should not be taken lightly.

The symptoms of this particular type of depression are easier to differentiate and last longer than mild depression, and they are not as severe or frequent as the cases of major depression.  Those people who suffer with the moderate disorder may notice that they are no longer enjoying the pleasurable things in life.  Simple daily tasks may suddenly feel like a big chore.  It affects the full spectrum of the sufferer’s life including their social life and work and domestic activities.  If you feel that you may have even a moderate version of depression it is important to get help right away.  If your condition goes untreated for too long it can turn into full blown major depression.

How To Tell If You Have It

The World Health Organization has classified moderate depression as having two of the first three symptoms and at least four others as well.

1. Two weeks of an abnormally depressed mood.
2. Loss of interest or pleasure in activities that you used to find enjoyable.
3. A reduced level of energy or a tired feeling.
4. A lack of confidence and self esteem.
5. Feeling guilty and unworthy.
6. Recurrent thoughts of death or suicide, or any suicidal/self-harming behavior.
7. Reduced ability to think or concentrate.
8. Agitates or slow movements.
9. Disturbed sleep, either not enough sleep or too much sleep or poor quality.
10.  Change in appetite (increased or decreased) with a change in weight.
11.  Decreased libido.
12.  Unexplained physical symptoms.

People experiencing this type of depression will experience a decrease in self confidence and may become less social and more withdrawn.  Another symptom is lower productivity.  These people may also worry more than normal and fret over things that they have no control over.  They may appear to be very anxious and agitated.

There are many things that you can do to combat the problem.  Talk to your doctor about what medicines may be available for you.  There are also many natural remedies that have proven effective in reducing the moderate symptoms of depression.
