There are many causes of depression, and, as a result, there are many possible courses of action.  Additionally, there is no unanimous agreement in the psychological community as to how to treat depression.  There is no uniform prescription of treatment that will help everyone.  However, one method that can be highly effective in treating depression is cognitive therapy.

Basics Of Cognitive Psychology

Cognitive therapy aims at unmasking underlying cognitive distortions or errors in thinking.  It is based upon the principle that thoughts, or cognitions, create feelings; so if you change the thoughts then you change the feelings.

It is thought that this link is crucial in understanding the root causes of depression.  This may not be the source of the affective state in all affected persons, but for many it is a logical, effective course of treatment.

Cognitive Psychology Versus Medications

One benefit of such a source of treatment is that it is aimed at lasting results.  Medications must often be taken continually to maintain their results, and this is often no guarantee of continued effectiveness.

Patients may build up a tolerance to certain medications at which point a new course of treatment must then be found.  Also, medications bring with them the risk of side effects.

Cognitive therapy, on the other hand, deals directly with thoughts.  While medication may alleviate symptoms as the patient assesses current thought patterns and develops more productive ways of thinking, cognitive psychology aims to ameliorate symptoms in the long term.  While its effects may not be permanent, cognitive therapy provides tools that can be periodically reapplied to maintain relief from depression.

Cognitive Psychology Versus Other Forms Of Counselling

Cognitive therapy does not necessarily require that a patient re-explore childhood memories or past traumatic events that may have contributed to the current state like some other treatment modalities do.  While this exploration may be useful if the precipitating event happened recently, often it is thought to be more effective to handle the underlying thought patterns without requiring a re-examination or a reliving of the trauma.  This, of course, only applies in cases where trauma was the main cause of depressive symptoms.

The myriad of possible causes of depression makes it difficult, if not impossible, to state any absolute generalities.  Depression can be brought about by a traumatic event, chemical imbalance, or any number of factors.  Each style of treatment may have its own advantages, but cognitive psychology may be used in treatment with unique advantages.  Each case must be taken on its own merits, but cognitive psychology should always be considered as a viable option in depression treatment.
