Anxiety is a natural bodily reaction to stress.  In some people anxiety becomes severe and uncontrollable.  When this happens a person is said to have an anxiety disorder.  It can help to understand how to identify anxiety symptoms so you can better recognise if your anxiety is of the controlled type or if you may have an anxiety disorder.

Common Signs to Recognize Anxiety

Anxiety is best defined as worry, tension or anxious feelings that you get in a stressful situation.  Common signs of anxiety include increased heartbeat, breathing changes, jittery feelings and tension.  However, if these symptoms become severe and constant that can signal an anxiety disorder.  A person with an anxiety disorder can not seem to shake the anxiety and it will become an everyday occurrence.

A person with an anxiety disorder may exhibit the following symptoms:

– Constant tension or worry
– Feelings that interfere with daily life
– Irrational fears that will not go away
– Feelings that you must do something or something bad will happen
– Sudden attacks of panic
– Constant worry about bad things happening

Emotional Symptoms

Anxiety symptoms can be both emotional and physical.  The emotional symptoms can often be ignored or even disregarding as something else.  It is important to recognize the common emotional symptoms of anxiety.

Common emotional symptoms include:

– Feeling apprehensive
– Trouble with concentration
– Tension
– Anticipation of bad things happening
– Irritable moods
– Uneasy feelings or restlessness
– A complete loss of thought

Physical Symptoms

As mentioned besides emotional symptoms, anxiety can also bring physical symptoms.  The physical symptoms are hard to ignore, but often are mistaken for other medical conditions.  Many times doctors want to rule out medical causes of symptoms before a diagnosis of an anxiety disorder is made.

Here are the common physical symptoms of anxiety:

– Increased heart rate
– Excessive sweating
– Upset stomach
– Dizziness
– Problems breathing
– Twitching
– Tension in muscles
– Headaches
– Sleeping problems

Once you recognise the multiple symptoms of anxiety you can begin to recognise if your symptoms are normal or abnormal. If you suspect you may have an anxiety disorder you can seek help from your doctor.  He may do some tests to ensure there is no underlying medical condition, but once a diagnosis of an anxiety disorder is made you will given treatment that will help to ease and possibly eliminate your anxiety problems.
