Anxiety and panic attacks have an unfortunate relationship. Anxiety is an unpleasant emotion that arises out of stress, worry and fear. Fear is also a significant factor in panic attacks as well. When a person is consistently faced with feelings of anxiousness, he is more prone to develop panicked episodes.

Panic Attacks

It is necessary to understand the nature of panic attacks in order to understand their relationship to anxiety. The episodes are based in fear and the body responds as if it were under attack. The physical manifestations of fear and dread swell as the individual experiences a panicking spell.

Physical responses are intense during an attack and they can be quite frightening. The person feels a number of foreboding sensations that deepen feelings of panic. These include irregular or accelerated heart rate, tightness in the chest area, inability to breathe normally, shaking, and dizziness. There are other sensations that can occur when a person is having an attack.

Emotional responses are just as troublesome for the person experiencing the panicked episode. The individual may have overwhelming feelings of doom and dread, as if something tragic were about to happen. Some people describe emotional sensations so forceful that they feel as if they are dying during the experience.

The attacks occur without warning and they disappear nearly as quickly as they arrive. They leave a lasting impression on the person who experiences them in spite of their fleeting nature.

Panic and Anxiety

Once a person has experienced a panic attack, he becomes apprehensive that another episode is on the horizon. This is very stressful considering the intensity of the attack. Obsessive thoughts may develop as the person worries excessively about having an episode in public or while driving.

Anxiety is a natural response to the fear of having another attack. Unfortunately, excessive feelings of anxiousness can eventually lead to another episode. In effect, the individual may cause unnecessary anxiety that can lead to a panic attack by worrying about having an attack.

Relaxation and Treatment

Relaxation techniques can be very effective in treating anxiety and panic attacks. This can be difficult to accomplish without guidance. Some people may require instruction in order to develop an effective form of relaxation.

Proper care and treatment is essential in the effort to overcome anxiety and panic attacks. Consulting a physician is a very important aspect to developing a comprehensive treatment plan.
