Depression is a serious illness that affects millions of people.  Depression is characterized by a depressed mood or a loss of interest or pleasure in things.  People that suffer with depression also may lack energy or the desire to do anything and have no motivation.  They may also experience feelings of worthlessness, hopelessness and despair.  Many people that have depression have disturbed sleep or sleep more than normal.  There are many symptoms of depression and not everyone who has depression will experience the same symptoms.  If you think that you or someone that you love may have depression it is important to get help immediately and discuss the treatments that might work best for you.

There are many different treatments of depression available.  If the depression that is being experienced is a mild form then most times the best help available is the support and encouragement of friends and family.  Sometimes a person who is experiencing mild depression just wants someone to listen to them and validate their feelings in a loving and accepting manner.  If a person is suffering with more than just mild depression it is important to see a health professional for treatment.

Health professionals such as psychiatrists and psychotherapists treat depression in a wide variety of ways.  Treatment for depression varies from person to person and a health care professional will help decide what treatments are the most appropriate.  When a person with depression first sees a mental health specialist an extensive evaluation will be conducted.  If medication is prescribed a person can generally expect to begin feeling better in a few weeks.  Some of the medical treatments that may be used on patients with depression include Prozac and Lithium.

In addition to medicine a health care professional may also prescribe individual psychotherapy aimed at determining what the underlying causes of the depression are.  Some therapies focus on changing negative thoughts into positive thoughts.  Group therapy is also beneficial form of treatment and helps patients who have a hard time developing healthy relationships.
Therapists may help individuals make changes in difficult life situations. With the individual’s permission, they can set up meetings with friends or parents to explore ways of resolving a crisis. Depressed individuals who are at high risk of killing themselves may need to be in a hospital temporarily. While this is often seen as a drastic measure, it can be life-saving, and it may allow effective treatment to begin. Another type of treatment for depression that is gaining in popularity is music therapy which uses music to help people work through their feelings or express themselves.  Psychiatrists may also have patients engage in talk therapy to voice their concerns and fears in a safe environment.

There are many ways to treat depression.  Treating depression is not a one-size-fits-all approach, but a combination of therapies to achieve relief in the way that is most desirable to you.
